D.E.A.R. at DHS

March 3rd, 2006 by readdecatur in News · No Comments

D.E.A.R. was a huge success at Decatur High School!  Everyone in the school read uninterrupted for 30 minutes during First Block.  We enjoyed the music of Vivaldi over the video distribution system while we read.  Comments ranged from “When are we going to do that again?” to “I didn’t want to stop reading”.

Tell us how you spent your 30 minutes of D.E.A.R.

I need a good book to read for D.E.A.R. !?!

Sometimes it’s hard to find a great book. Recommendations from librarians, friends, teachers, and parents are a good place to start. You will soon be seeing “celebrity” READ posters around your school that will showcase books that your teachers enjoy.

Another great place to find your next book is Novelist. Novelist is a database that allows you to search by author, titles, series and plot. Search for a book that you have read, click the “Similar Books” button and ta-daa!…more great books, just for you!

READ posters

February 22nd, 2006 by awhitley in News · No Comments

We are busy across our school system making READ posters of our staff.  It is so much fun to see what books each individual wants to spotlight.  Memories of childhood favorites (Rabbit Hill) to new favorites (The Tale of Despereaux).  I am busy reading the Chronicles of Narnia, and am about to finish Prince Caspian.  Can’t believe I never read these until now!  We are never bored when we have good books around us!  Ann Whitley

The library media specialists across the City Schools of Decatur are sponsoring a Read Across Decatur Day, which will kick off a month of emphasis on our wonderful libraries and our school system’s love of reading. Several activities are in the works, including posters, bookmarks, art contests, and other fun ideas.

We would like for the entire community of the City Schools of Decatur, including all staff, to Drop Everything and Read on March 2, which is Dr. Seuss’ birthday, for thirty minutes somewhere between the times of 9:20 and 10:00 am as suits your school’s schedule. We will ask all resource teachers (i.e. Spanish, Art, Music, PE) to have their books with them and to join the students in this DEAR time.

Watch for posters and announcements of activities throughout the month of March.
